All Saints Winterton

Laying the groundwork for a medieval church’s transformation into a community and heritage hub.

Culture + Heritage Consultancy

Taskscape provided consultancy and building plans to help All Saints’ Church in Winterton, Lincolnshire, lay the foundations for a project which has since transformed the Grade I–listed building into an active community venue.

Brief

All Saints’ Church in Winterton is a medieval church serving a community of almost 5,000 in north Lincolnshire. As with several of Taskscape’s church projects, the brief centred on reimagining a historic building for contemporary use, assessing how the church could expand its role beyond worship while securing its long-term physical and financial viability.

Activity

  • Conducted cultural audits and stakeholder engagement to understand community needs and aspirations
  • Developed business cases and purpose synthesis for new development plans
  • Provided initial building plans through an embedded architect associate

Outcomes

  • Work fed into the ‘All Saints Forward’ project, which secured Heritage Lottery Fund support and completed a first phase of repair and conservation by 2014
  • A new extension with facilities opened in 2023, enabling the church to function as a heritage centre and community venue
  • The reordered building now hosts weekly community meals on a ‘pay as you can afford’ basis, concerts, a community choir, an annual beer festival and regular private hires
