Lišov Museum

A film installation bringing a world-class mask collection to life in a Slovak village museum.

Culture + Heritage Content

Taskscape created a video installation celebrating the Lišov Museum’s unique collection of over 400 European and African masks and their connections to traditional Slovak seasonal folk practices, featuring contributions from celebrated Slovak artists.

Brief

Lišov Museum is a community-run heritage museum in the village of Lišov in southern Slovakia, best known for its Gallery of Masks—a collection of over 400 masks from around the world, donated by an Oxford scholar. The collection includes an Egyptian funerary mask over 5,000 years old and is described as the only gallery of its kind in Slovakia. Taskscape was contracted to create an installation film connecting the static collection to Slovakia’s dynamic living traditions of seasonal masked folk practices, including Fašiangy carnival processions and the ritual burning of Morena effigies.

Activity

  • Created a video installation using innovative craft filmmaking techniques to bring the mask collection alive
  • Incorporated interviews with artists and experts, as well as coverage of traditional masked folk practices on location

Outcomes

  • Video installation of ~10 minutes added to the museum’s permanent exhibition
  • Content shared online and at events as part of EU Erasmus+ courses and associated promotion via Museum partner and past client Grampus Heritage and Training
