St Mary’s Hamilton

Reimagining a 19th-century church as a community hub for Hamilton.

Culture + Heritage Consultancy

Taskscape provided consultancy and brought in an architect associate to help St Mary’s Episcopal Church in Hamilton accelerate its evolution into a mixed church and community space, a project that has since been fully realised as ‘St Mary’s for All’.

Brief

St Mary’s Episcopal Church in Hamilton had already begun providing space for community activities, from café drop-ins to meeting rooms for divorced parents and support groups. Taskscape was contracted to help the church build on this success, assessing whether this multipurpose direction was right, how to do it better and how to add value while continuing to operate as a place of worship. The brief covered feasibility, funding strategy and translating ambitions into practical building development plans.

Activity

  • Conducted a cultural audit with church and community stakeholders to map possibilities and priorities, from short to long-term.
  • Brought in an architect associate to develop initial building development plans
  • Supported funding strategies and applications

Outcomes

  • The project was fully realised as ‘St Mary’s for All’, a registered charity and social enterprise offering fully accessible community spaces for hire alongside worship
  • The redeveloped centre now hosts flexible meeting rooms, a gathering space, café and catering facilities
  • In 2025–26 the building became the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway’s flagship net-zero pioneer project, with solar panels and battery storage installed
